Doors Open Toronto
This weekend was the annual "Doors Open Toronto" event. Many historic buildings and landmarks are open to the public for two days only (doorsopen.org). It is a great idea, and I hope it will be back again next year.
The upcoming move is keeping us busy, so I only made it to one landmark site - the Don Valley Brick Works. During the past two summers I drove by this site once a week on my way back from volleyball at Ashbridges Bay. Every time I thought that I'd like to go and take a closer look. So today I finally went, and it was great. As part of Doors Open, guided tours were offered. The tour guides did an excellent job describing the history of the brick works as well as the park behind it.
A charity organization called Evergreen (evergreen.ca) is currently raising money for a project to convert the place into a cultural centre. A lot of information, including how to donate, can be found at brickworks.ca.
What a great city. This little park lets you forget you're in the middle of a city. I had a great afternoon. Next year I am going to check out more landmarks.
